Il pomo d‘oro (1666/1668)

Animated Retelling of a
Baroque Festive Opera

Daniela Franke

The opera Il pomo d’oro (“The golden Apple”) is one of the most important testimonials of Viennese festival culture from the second half of the 17th century. Written by Francesco Sbarra (1611–1668) and composed for the most part by Antonio Cesti (1623–1669), it was originally planned for the year 1666 on occasion of the wedding of emperor Leopold I. and the Spanish Infanta Margarita Teresa. However, as the new court theatre (the ‘Theater auf der Kurtine’) was not completed when the bride arrived, the performance took place one and a half years later – now on the occasion of the 17th birthday of the young empress. The opera tells the mythological story of the Judgement of Paris, while the prologue and the final scene refer to the dynastic meaning of the marriage and pay homage to the dedicatees. The theatre engineer Lodovico Ottavio Burnacini (1636–1707) created 23 individual stage designs and a large number of costumes for the highly prestigious opera performance. The elaborate set designs were widely spread and memorialized through copperplate engravings either bound into luxurious copies of the libretto or published separately.

The animation summarizes the whole plot of the opera within about 30 minutes, while the real performance presumably took 10 hours distributed over two days. The modernized retelling is based, on the one hand, on the libretto, and on the other, on a so-called ‘scenario‘, that gives short synopses of the five acts and explains the changes of scenery and stage effects. Utilizing both these sources Burnacini’s stage designs have been carefully animated and brought to life.
