The wing that connected the Fortress of the Royal Palace to the Great Hall was named in the 17th century as the “Fort Gallery”. It was intended at the time to be the rooms for King Afonso VI, according to the will of his mother, Luisa de Gusmão. In fact, if in the past this area of the palace served in the main as a link between the bastion and the heart of the palace, after the Restoration and with the enlargement of the royal family this area was reserved for King Afonso VI and later for King John V.
This wing marked the west side of the great square of Terreiro do Paço and is always represented in the iconography of the city of Lisbon of the early modern period.
